I have you covered!

Suppose you’re searching for an off-the-beaten-path destination. In that case, Troyes in France has a treasure trove of experiences and sights to offer.

And if you insist on knowing my top three things to do in Troyes, they would be:

This charismatic city has so much to offer that it distinguishes itself from the rest of France. Explore the old town

Explore the charming row of wooden buildings on a picturesque street in Troyes, France.

Stepping into Troyes’ Old Town is like stepping into a time machine, transporting you back to medieval times! Prepare to be enchanted by the half-timbered houses, narrow cobbled streets, and a labyrinth of charming alleyways that exemplify the city’s historical charm. Here are the top attractions and some of the things you should not miss when exploring the old city centre:

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul

A large stone building with a fence, offering several things to do in Troyes.

Are you ready to be awestruck? Then you can’t miss the magnificent Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul! The moment you step through the grand entrance (which is free!), you’ll understand why I hold this place so close to my heart.

The Cathedral’s stunning stained glass windows, some of the most intricate I’ve seen anywhere, cast a vibrant, ethereal light that fills the majestic interior, making the incredible vaulted Gothic arches soar to life.

And then there’s the peaceful choral music that washes over you, amplifying the Cathedral’s serene, otherworldly ambience. Believe me when I say the photos don’t do it justice!

And let’s not forget the historic artistry on display. In the choir, marvel at the 13th-century stained glass windows that depict Mary, Saint John, Biblical events, and figures from the Middle Ages.

The awe-inspiring Tree of Jesse from circa 1500 and the Mystic Wine Press from 1625 by Linard Gonthier are masterpieces in the nave you can’t afford to miss.

One thing that struck me was how it’s not overrun by tourists. It’s a tranquil space for reflection amidst the buzz of the city. If you want a tip from me, pick up a leaflet at the entrance—it provides invaluable insights into the narratives behind the windows.

Exploring this Cathedral is an awe-inspiring journey that will make you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time, and it is a must-do when you’re in Troyes.

Did I mention the 18th-century sculpted wooden stalls from the Clairvaux Abbey and the grand organs? They’re simply breathtaking!

Stroll through Ruelle des Chats

Next on our magical journey through Troyes, France, is the one-of-a-kind Ruelle des Chats! Now, don’t be fooled by the name (which translates to “Alley of Cats”). It might suggest a feline-filled frenzy, but the cats have had their day.

Instead, we humans get to enjoy this charming, narrow alleyway. As you wander through, you’re instantly transported back to medieval times by the ancient timber-framed houses, so close they practically touch. It’s like stepping into a scene from Shakespeare or Molière!

Families, gather ’round! There’s a little game sure to delight the kids (and you big kids, too!). Hidden amongst the timber are images of our feline friends. How many can you find? But beware of the pigeons – they’ve been known to get a bit cheeky and aim at visitors (wink, wink). And trust me, they don’t miss.

Take a break from the hunt and satisfy your culinary cravings at Pierre & Clement Troyes, a little gem tucked away on the corner of this historic alley. Their menu is divine (if you want more tips on great restaurants in Troyes, you can read my article here).

Just around the bend, there’s a delightful shop selling cat-related things. A perfect souvenir from your walk down the Meow Lane that’s now more coo than purr.

Ruelle des Chats runs from Champeaux Street to Rue Charbonnet, right in the beating heart of Bouchon de Champagne. It’s easy to find and well worth a visit. If you found the Shambles at York intriguing, wait until you see Ruelle des Chats—it’s a true dream for history buffs!

Tip: Troyes has many amazing little squares where you can drink a glass of Champagne. You can always take a break after visiting the must-see attractions. A trip to Troyes is incomplete without popping a champagne cork!

Discover the Museums

Brace yourself, culture vultures! Troyes is a charming medieval city and a treasure trove of museums! Each is a delightful surprise, packed to the rafters with fascinating artefacts, stunning art, and captivating stories from the past.

Tip: There are so many places to visit in Troyes. I recommend visiting the tourist office in Troyes to discover the best attractions that fit your kind of travel.

Explore contemporary art at Musée d’Art Moderne.

When wandering Troyes’s charming, historic streets, you must stop at the Musee d’Art Moderne. It is a quaint, family-owned collection of awe-inspiring art in a stunning, modernised building.

The exposed half-timbered walls and ancient wooden staircases of the Museum of Modern Art blend seamlessly with the modern art pieces, creating a unique juxtaposition of history and contemporary culture. Not to mention the breathtaking Marinot glass display and remarkable works from Braque, Dufy, and Matisse.

The museum is a mere 20-minute stroll from the city centre, right next to the grandeur of the Cathedral. And here’s the kicker: the entrance fee is only 5 euros for adults and absolutely free for children!

You can even grab an all-inclusive 12-euro ticket from the Tourist Information Centre that covers all tourist attractions in Troyes.

Embark on a Historical Adventure at Apothicairerie de l’hotel Dieu le Conte

Here’s something unique for your bucket list—Apothicairerie de l’hotel Dieu le Conte! Imagine stepping back in time, immersing yourself in a world where medicine was an art filled with mysterious potions, curious instruments and intriguing remedies from a bygone era.

This petite ‘apothecary’ is a precious gem, one of the few left in France. Its intimate size adds to its charm—just three quaint rooms brimming with antique bottles, ceramic jars, mortar and pestles, boxes, and ancient instruments.

Now, I’m not going to lie—some of the ‘cures’ from the 18th century may slightly turn your stomach (crayfish eyes, anyone?). But that’s all part of the charm, really. It’s a glimpse into how far we’ve come in medicine!

The wealth of history and amazement packed into this little treasure trove is well worth the 2 euro entrance fee.

Tip: don’t forget to ask for the free English guidebook when entering.

Discover the Art of Craftsmanship at Maison de l’Orient et de la Pensée Ouvrière

An enchanting collection of old fashioned items on display in front of a building, showcasing the rich history and charm of Troyes.

I know what you’re thinking: “A museum about tools and craftsmanship? Really?” But trust me, this place is an absolute marvel, even if tools aren’t your cup of tea! We’re talking thousands of exhibits stunningly displayed, a testament to the complexity and virtuosity of the artisans of yore.

From basket weavers who were also bear handlers (who’d have thought, right?) to the intricate process of making a wheel or barrel, this museum brings to life the fascinating world of medieval professions.

Each exhibit is a tribute to the painstakingly honed skills of our ancestors, with every imaginable tool for every profession under the sun.

The audio guide is top-notch and essential, given the many exhibits. It helps paint a vivid picture of the life and times of these artisans.

You can easily spend over two hours here, wholly engrossed in this immersive journey back in time.

The museum is housed in an old, character-filled building, adding charm. The entry fee is a mere €7 per person, an absolute bargain considering the treasure trove of experiences it offers.

Indulge in Local Gastronomy

Get ready to embark on a compelling journey of tastes and textures! Troyes, an absolute gem in the culinary scene, promises an array of delectable local delicacies that will tickle your taste buds like never before. Here are three local specialities you should be aware of!

Try the Authentic Andouillette de Troyes

Now, brace yourself for a culinary adventure with a royal lineage – the Andouillette de Troyes! It has been a delicacy since the Middle Ages, a traditional product of the diligent pork butchers of Troyes.

It’s entirely hand-prepared, using selected parts of large pork intestines and stomachs, cut into long strips, and seasoned with fresh onions, salt, and pepper!

One bite, and you’ll be spellbound by its sharp taste and delicate texture. Did you know this was once a distraction for the Royal Army soldiers in 1560, who were supposed to be fighting the Champagne army but were too busy seeking out Andouillettes?

In fact, the Andouillette de Troyes was so beloved that it had its own fan club! The Association Amicale des Amateurs d’Andouillette Authentique (AAAAA) was formed around 1970 to preserve this legendary sausage’s identity and uniqueness.

Even the famed King Louis XIV and Emperor Napoleon indulged in it.

Visit Le Moine Gourmand, Aux Crieurs de Vin, or Chez Felix to enjoy the authentic Andouillette de Troyes.

Try some wine and Champagne from Troyes.

A row of wine bottles with corks on them, a must-see for wine enthusiasts visiting Troyes.

Did you know that Troyes, besides its culinary treasures, boasts a delightful secret? This enchanting city holds the historical capital status of France’s Champagne region!

While Troyes may not be overflowing with Champagne producers, it doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in the region’s world-renowned sparkling wine around Troyes.

Just a short distance from the city lies the picturesque village of Montgueux, nestled on a lush hill. It is an absolute must-visit for wine enthusiasts.

With its 215-hectare vineyard, this quaint haven is home to 40 dedicated winegrowers, each pouring their heart and soul into crafting exquisite Chardonnay. This is great if you want to visit Champagne vineyards without the crowds.

Among these passionate cultivators, 24 are exceptional winemakers who welcome you to savour their unique creations right on their estates!

Suppose you are looking to visit the well-known Champagne producers and Champagne houses. In that case, you can always check out my article on the best Champagne tours in the region.

Tip: One of the best champagne producers in Montgueux is Champagne Beaugrand. You can find out more on their TripAdvisor page.

Treat yourself to a glass of Prunelle de Troyes.

So, you’ve savoured the Andouillette and sipped the Champagnes of Troyes. What’s next, you ask? Let me introduce you to the Prunelle de Troyes, a hidden gem you cannot miss! This is Troyes Sloe Gin, a gold medal winner at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition!

Crafted from the kernels of small, wild plums – the blackthorn or sloe – this extraordinary gin has been distilled since 1840, staying true to its original recipe.

Sipping on it, you’ll be transported to the Cellier Saint Pierre distillery, nestled opposite the majestic Troyes cathedral.

The Prunelle de Troyes is a versatile treat. Enjoy it chilled as a digestif after a hearty meal, or pair it with a sorbet or frozen nougat for the ‘trou Champenois.’ Better yet, jazz up your classic Champagne cocktail with a splash of Prunelle! You can also sip it slowly, allowing your taste buds to dance in the delight of its unique flavour.

From my own experience, I can assure you that this is an indulgence you’ll fondly remember long after you’ve left the charming city of Troyes.

Shop at the Factory Outlets

Fancy a spot of shopping, do you? Well then, you’re in for a splendid surprise in Troyes! This charming city isn’t just about hearty gastronomy and delightful drinks; it’s also a shoppers’ paradise.

Known for its fabulous factory outlets, Troyes is the ultimate destination for fashion enthusiasts looking for a great bargain! Imagine high-end brands and the latest fashions, all at prices that won’t have you clutching your wallet in despair.

 McArthurGlen Troyes

Alright, folks, buckle up because it’s time for a shopping spree! When you’re in Troyes, you cannot – I repeat, cannot – miss out on the McArthurGlen Troyes. In fact, for many, this is one of the most important reasons to visit Troyes, as it was initially marketed as the best outlet in Europe!

110 boutiques are housing your favourite designer brands like Boss, Michael Kors, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Pandora, and so many more – all at significantly reduced prices. I mean, who doesn’t love a bargain, right?

And guess what? It’s just a stone’s throw away from Troyes Centre, making it super convenient for you to pop over. The layout is a treat, mimicking the charming, old centre of Troyes – it’s a delightful mix of the past and the present.

Fancy a break from all the shopping? You’ll find numerous cafes and restaurants to rest your tired feet and refuel. And for those of you with little ones, there’s a fun children’s play area to keep them entertained.

Oh, and guess what? This is the perfect pit stop for driving from the UK to the Alpes or the South of France. Plus, they have free parking – yes, you heard it right, free parking!

Take it from me, folks – McArthurGlen Troyes is more than just a shopping destination. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss! So, when are you planning your trip?

Marques Avenue Troyes

Let’s not forget about Marques Avenue in Troyes! Sure, it may be a tad smaller than McArthurGlen Troyes, but it packs a punch! Nestled indoors, it’s ideal for some retail therapy, come rain or shine.

You’ll be pleased to hear that Marques Avenue is home to an array of fantastic brands like Descamps, Bayard, Clarks, Levis, Triumph, Promod, and Sergent Major – all offering amazing discounts!

In fact, you can head over to their website to check out how much you’ll be saving before you even set foot in the store!

They’ve also got some delightful food and beverage outlets for when you fancy a bit of a breather. They’ve got you covered whether you’re craving a quick coffee or a leisurely lunch.

Explore the markets in Troyes

Now, who doesn’t love a good market, right? Bursting with vibrant colours and a symphony of sounds, they offer a window into the heart of a city.

And in Troyes, the markets are nothing short of spectacular! From the grandeur of the Central Market – Les Halles, the rustic charm of the Market “des Marots”, to the delightful Farmers’ market in Torvilliers, there’s a bounty of fresh produce, local delicacies, and unique treasures waiting to be discovered.

Central Market in Troyes

A vibrant market in Troyes offering a plethora of fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you’re in town, you must visit the Central Market in Troyes, also known as the Marché des Halles! Open from 9 am to 1 pm every day, this covered market is an absolute treat for the senses! Trust me, not exploring the aisles of this local treasure would be a huge mistake.

Imagine this – the alluring aroma of fresh coffee wafting through the air as you pick up ingredients for your evening dinner.

It is honestly only possible to leave by buying something! Be it the decadent chocolates and macarons from Maison Caffet or the heavenly cheese from Julien Pouillot, every bite promises a taste of heaven (The Charolais and the Chaource come highly recommended by yours!).

And don’t even get me started on the delicious wraps of duck or guinea fowl jazzed up with black pepper, mushrooms, or prunes. The variety of choices for a quick lunch is mind-boggling!

Market “des Marots”

Next up is the charming Market “des Marots”. Nestled opposite the “Maison de quartier des Marots”, this delightful market celebrates local flavours!

Small producers from the Aube department set up shop here to offer a mouthwatering array of local specialities.

Can you imagine the sheer joy of indulging in fresh, homemade specialities, knowing you’re supporting local businesses? It’s the perfect opportunity to take a delicious deep dive into the heart of Troyes’ culinary scene.

The market is every first Wednesday of the month from 8am to 1pm.

Farmers’ market in Torvilliers

Now, if you have a car handy, I urge you to take a short trip to the quaint village of Torvilliers. This little spot is home to a charming farmer’s market every Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

The shop Compas Point Vert organises the market in their car park.

The variety is astonishing! You’ll find various professionals selling everything from fresh produce to hand-painted porcelain. And let’s not forget about the tempting sweet and salty treats alongside beer from a local microbrewery.

If you’re a fan of sparkling wine, you’re in for a treat! They sell Cremant de Bourgogne – a personal favourite of mine. It tastes as delightful (I think even better) as any Champagne without the hefty price tag!

Attend Festivals and Events

A hub of things to do in Troyes, the hotel is conveniently located in a prime building.

If you’re looking to immerse yourself even further into the vibrant life of Troyes, the local festivals and events are not to be missed! Here are some of the best events to look out for in Troyes.

Foires de Champagne

Foires de Champagne is a mesmerising exhibition that transforms Troyes into a bustling marketplace each spring. Shopkeepers, craftspeople, and enthusiasts from far and wide come to showcase their passions.

This fair is a cultural melting pot that brings together the best of entertainment, gastronomy, and community spirit.

Each year, the Champagne Fair shines the spotlight on a different country, adding an international flair to the proceedings and making every fair a unique and enriching experience.

March Fair

The March Faire is a mammoth funfair that takes over Troyes every year. Imagine the thrill of a roller coaster ride, the spooky excitement of a ghost train, and the bumping laughter of the dodgems!

Explore Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park and Lac d’Orient

You will want to visit the three large artificial lakes near Troyes if you love nature. In fact, the area is home to the largest man-made lake in Europe: Lac d’Orient. This large lake near Troyes is located between Troyes and Chaumont.

Now, if you’re a cycling enthusiast like me, you’ll fall in love with the cycle route that encircles almost the entire Lac d’Orient! It’s a tarmacked track that’s easy to navigate, even for young riders.

There is also a sizeable lakeside park where you can indulge in water sports and other recreational activities.

The charming village of Dienne, located right by the lake, is an absolute must-visit. Its pretty flower beds and tranquil river make it the perfect place for a leisurely stroll. Lac du Temple, the second largest lake, is known for its fantastic fauna and flora.

The three lakes, all man-made and part of a brilliant flood alleviation scheme, and the surrounding forest offer incredible opportunities for bird and fauna spotting. However, I must tell you, the free plan for hiking tracks at the tourist info isn’t always very clear.

Conclusion

Troyes is a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty, offering a unique experience for every traveller. It is the perfect spot for a weekend break.

I love dark, narrow streets, market days, and champenoise Gothic architecture. From exploring its medieval streets to indulging in exquisite local cuisine, Troyes has a charm that captivates all who visit. And even if you are not into that stuff, you can have a glass of champagne at one of the many bars and bistros!
