It’s tucked away to the east of Paris, making it a great day trip if you’re tired of exploring Paris. Imagine swapping the hustle and bustle of Paris for a day, immersing yourself in a world where time seems to have stood still.

How to pronounce Troyes

Pronouncing “Troyes,” a charming town in France, can be a bit tricky if you’re not familiar with French pronunciation. But don’t worry! Let’s break it down:

The first thing to know is that the “es” at the end of “Troyes” is silent. So, we’re already simplifying things a bit.

“Troyes” is pronounced similar to the French word for three, “trois”. However, it’s not an exact match. Here’s how to say it:

“Troyes”: This is pronounced as “Trwa.”

The “T” is pronounced like “T” in English, and the “r” is lightly rolled, much softer than in English.

The “oy” part sounds like “wa.”

Remember that the final “es” is silent, so resist the urge to pronounce it.

What’s the weather like in Troyes? The summers that are short, warm, and partly cloudy, offering the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll through the city’s ancient streets.

Winters in Troyes can be quite a spectacle too – granted they’re a bit cold and windy, but the mostly cloudy skies create such a dramatic backdrop for the city’s stunning architecture.

Now, as much as I adore both seasons, I would advise packing some warm clothes if you’re visiting during winter as temperatures can drop to near freezing (0°C to be precise)!

On the flip side, the summers provide a lovely warmth, with temperatures peaking around a comfortable 26°C. Not too hot, not too cold, just the way we like it!

So, when’s the best time to visit Troyes, you ask? Based on my own adventures, I would suggest anytime from mid-June to early September.

But remember, this is Northern France we’re talking about, so there’s always a chance of rain. So, don’t forget to pack that umbrella, just in case!

The shoulder seasons here offer their own unique charm. You’ll find Troyes delightfully tranquil, yet just as captivating. It’s like having the city all to yourself, with fewer crowds and no rush, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in its rich history and culture.

Now, here’s a little secret for my budget-conscious friends out there. Winter is your ally if you want to save some pennies. Yes, it’s a bit on the colder side, but the city’s architectural beauty under a cloudy sky? Simply breathtaking!

If you’re on a tight schedule, you can still get a glimpse of its beauty in a single day.

However, I must say, to truly appreciate all that Troyes has to offer, taking your time is the way to go! You could easily spend half a day just meandering through the quaint, pedestrianised streets.

Ruelle des Chats: A Must-See!

Not to be missed in Troyes is the charming Ruelle des Chats! Walking down this narrow, medieval street is like stepping back in time.

The half-timbered houses leaning over the alley at impossible angles are a sight to behold! It’s as if they’re whispering tales of the city’s rich past to those who pass by.

One of my personal favourite moments was spotting the tiny cat statues hidden among the houses – hence the name, ‘Cat Alley’! It’s a delightful treasure hunt that adds a sprinkle of whimsy to your stroll.

The Majestic Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Cathedral

Next up, the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Cathedral. Trust me, you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the sheer magnificence of this Gothic marvel.

Its towering spires and intricate stained glass windows are nothing short of awe-inspiring. I found myself lost in the cathedral’s grandeur, sitting quietly for a moment in the hushed tranquillity.

It was, without a doubt, one of the most profound experiences of my trip.

Their Gothic gabled roofs add a dash of old-world charm to this enchanting city. But the architectural majesty doesn’t stop there!

Troyes is also home to nine listed churches, each with their unique architectural splendour! Among them, the cathedral is a must-visit for its heavenly celestial feel and the church where the English king Henry V tied the knot!

In terms of accommodation, let me tell you about three amazing places that I just adore in Troyes!

First up is Le Champ Des Oiseaux & Spa. This is in my opinion the best hotel in Troyes. It’s like stepping into a serene oasis with beautifully decorated rooms and a spa that’s simply divine!

Next on the list is La Licorne Hotel & Spa! Nestled comfortably in the charming historic district, it offers a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. Their spa services are top-notch, and the rooms are comfy and clean. It is the best hotel in Troyes with spa.

What are the best campsites near Troyes

There’s something quite magical about embracing the great outdoors around this historic city. There are several beautiful campsites near Troyes, each offering a unique way to explore this delightful part of France. Here are my recommendations:

Camping Le Lac d’Orient

My first recommendation is the delightful Camping Le Lac d’Orient. This gem offers something for everyone and is perfect for both campervan and tent enthusiasts! It’s located right on the road by the lake, and comes with a picturesque cycle path that encircles the entire area.

The main shower and facilities block is wonderfully modern and clean, giving you that little bit of luxury during your camping adventure!

However, be aware that their secondary facilities block is somewhat old and could do with a little TLC. Also, the pitch sizes lean towards the small side – something to keep in mind as you plan your stay.

The evening entertainment is a hoot, although you’ll find it’s separate from the bar, meaning there’s no watching while enjoying a tipple. The pool is lovely and warm, providing a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration.

Camping les Rives du Lac

Next up is Camping les Rives du Lac! It’s a lovely little site next to a man-made lake. They have spaces for tents and caravans, so you can choose your comfort level! Every morning, you can look forward to a tasty breakfast from their splendid little food / snack bar, and they also offer evening meals.

The site’s location is simply amazing, right by the lake, so you can start your day with a refreshing walk! As for the quietude, it’s just unmatched. The sanitary blocks are kept astonishingly clean. You might feel €16 is a bit steep for such basic facilities — no toilet paper, soap, dryers, or seats, mind you — but the experience itself is well worth it!

Camping de l’Isle Cherlieu

Last on our list is the charming Camping de l’Isle Cherlieu.

Nestled alongside a tranquil river, this petite campsite, run by a delightful Dutch couple, truly is a hidden gem!

While a bit rustic, the site is immaculate and well-maintained, offering a spotless place for both tents and caravans.

Just a heads-up though – the place is a tad on the pricier side at €25 for two people with electricity, but let me tell you, the beautiful surroundings make it worth every penny!

Where to eat in Troyes

When it comes to savouring the culinary delights of Troyes, you’re in for a real treat. This charming town is brimming with gastronomic gems that’ll tickle your taste buds like never before.

From chic bistros serving mouth-watering traditional dishes to cosy cafés offering a medley of delightful pastries, there’s something for every foodie here!

Felix Restaurant is a great restaurant in Troyes, tucked away in the quaint Ruelle des Chats.

This place is an absolute must-visit! Housed in a charming old building, Felix gives a modern twist to its traditional surroundings.

But it’s their mouth-watering French cuisine that truly steals the show! You absolutely must try their Foie Gras de Canard – it’s a game-changer, really, and the Salade de Poulet Grillé is top-notch!

La Maison Restaurant

Next up is the fabulous La Maison Restaurant. Stepping into this place is like being transported straight into a classic French maison with a warm, inviting atmosphere that just makes you go “Wow!”.

When it comes to their menu, let me tell you, it’s a foodie’s paradise! Their terrine of pork and smoked duck is an absolute showstopper – each bite is a delightful explosion of flavours.

If you’re a fan of fish, their home-smoked trout is a must-try. It’s delicate, moist, and oh-so-flavourful!

And, of course, no visit to Troyes would be complete without indulging in the renowned Andouillette de Troyes, and La Maison serves up one of the best in town.

Le Valentino Troyes

Last, but certainly not least, is the charming Le Valentino Troyes.

Nestled within a breathtaking 17th-century half-timbered house, this spot is pure magic!

Their food presentation is a scene-stealer, every dish meticulously served to a high standard – so much so, you’d almost hate to disturb the art on your plate.

The flavours are out of this world, especially their Arctic char fillet served with a medley of root vegetables. Talk about a symphony of flavours in your mouth!

And let’s not forget about their roasted turbot with scorzonera – it’s a testament to their commitment to using only the freshest, top-quality ingredients.

Got a lunch break during a weekday? Make sure you stop by between Tuesday and Friday for their delightful Market Menu. At just €32, it’s a steal for such an outstanding culinary experience.

How do you get from Paris to Troyes

Getting from the hustle and bustle of Paris to the charming, historic city of Troyes is a piece of cake – and I’ve got the inside scoop to make your journey as smooth as possible! Now, there are a few ways to do this.

First, you can hop on a train from Paris Gare de l’Est – isn’t it just convenient? The journey will fly by in about 1 hour and 27 minutes.

If you’d prefer a more laid-back journey, there’s always the bus. This will take a bit longer – about 2 hours and 20 minutes – but it’s a great way to sit back, relax, and take in the scenery!

Or, if you’re up for an adventure, you can get behind the wheel and drive yourself! It’s about a 2-hour drive from Paris to Troyes – perfect for a mini road trip.

However, if I were to give my two cents, I’d say go for the train or car.

How to get from Troyes to Reims

The trip from Troyes to Reims is best done by car. Just hop onto the A26 and you’ll be there in about an hour and a half.

It’s a really picturesque drive and you get to control your own pace, and let’s not forget those impromptu pit-stops for some mouthwatering French pastries along the way!

Now, you might be wondering about the train or bus, right? Well, I can tell you from experience, it’s not the best option for this trip.

There’s no direct train connection between Troyes and Reims – you’d have to go all the way back to Paris and then hop on a train from there.

And as for the bus, it’s a bit of a roundabout route too. You’d first need to take the bus to Gare de Châlons-en-Champagne and then catch a train from there to Reims. It takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes, and honestly, it’s a bit of a hassle.

Is there an airport near Troyes?

Technically, there is indeed an airport near Troyes, the Troyes – Barberey Airport.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any services currently running from this airport since Danube Wings cancelled their seasonal service.

The nearest operational airports are Orly and Charles de Gaulle, both located in Paris.

Where to park in Troyes?

If you’re driving around in Troyes, no worries, mate! There are a few good spots where you can park your car and explore the city at ease.

First I would recommend Parking Victor Hugo. It’s a small car park on Boulevard Victor Hugo, just right for a quick stop.

The Danton car park, with its shady trees next to the river on Boulevard Danton, is another great recommendation!

But if convenience is your game, you can’t beat the Hotel de Ville car park. It’s a 24/7 underground parking space right in the heart of the city on Rue Général de Gaulle.

Yes, there is a station in Troyes.

It is nestled snugly along the Paris–Mulhouse railway. You’ll find regional trains chugging in and out, whisking passengers off to the likes of Paris and Chaumont.

Is there uber in Troyes?

Yes! Uber and Uber Eats are operating in Troyes.

Does Troyes have a low emission zone?

Troyes does not have a low emission zone, so you can cruise around the city to your heart’s content. But if you’re taking a road trip to Reims, keep in mind that they do have a low emission zone. This means you will need a Crit’Air sticker.

Where can I find public toilets in Troyes?

You can find public toilets at the Train Station and at the office du tourisme. When nature calls you can also just grab a glass of coke at one of the many bars of cafes and use the facilities there.
