Top 10 best hotels in Kathmandu Nepal

When travelling to Kathmandu it might be hard to find a good hotel. Although there are loads of amazing small family owned hotels around Thamel, these hotels are not everyone’s cup of tea. In order to make your trip to Kathmandu easier I have compiled a list of the 10 best hotels in Kathmandu.

The Dwarika’s hotel is without a doubt one of the best top hotels in Kathmandu. The hotel is the winner of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Heritage Award and it is easy to see why they received such a prestigious award! Beautiful water features combined with locally and historically inspired architecture enable you to calm down in an oasis of absolute bliss. The Dwarika’s Hotel got its inspiration from Kathmandu Valley’s rich cultural heritage. At the hotel you can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool and four restaurants and bars.

The overall style and architecture of the hotel is inspired by the palaces of Newari Kings, featuring a wide-ranging collection of artifacts from the 13th century. The hotel is also superbly located as the Pashupatinath Temple is a mere 500 meters away while Kathmandu International Hotel Airport and the Buddhist site of Boudhanath are both 2 kilometers away from the hotel. You can take a taxi to Durbar Marg which is 5 km away.

The hotel offers Air-Conditioned rooms with satellite TV and seating area, private bathrooms with bathtubs, showers and free toiletries.

You can relax while making use of the spa and massage services the hotel offers. When you are done with your massage you can head to Krishnarpan for some amazing traditional Nepali dishes. If you want some sushi you can walk to Makos which serves Japanese cuisine. At Toran you can order continental dishes.

Baber Mahal Vilas

Baber Mahal Villa is a beautiful hotel in the center of Kathmandy. Sip from a beer at the outdoor swimming pool or head to the gym session after a nice dinner at the restaurant. The hotel also has a garden and a bar you can relax at.

All rooms are beautifully designed and come with air conditioning and a Tv with satellite channels. The hotel also offers free Wi-Fi to its guests and there is a private bathroom with a shower or bath in every room. The rooms also come with a hairdryer, a kettle and a desk so you can plan out your Nepal holiday over a cup of tea in the comfort of your own room.

Every day you can enjoy the lush continental breakfast the hotel serves. The hotel is not as central as you might hope as Kathmandu Durbar Square is almost 4 kilometers away and Patan Durbar Square is 4.5 kilometers by foot.

Kathmandu Marriott Hotel

You can hardly ever go wrong with a Marriott Hotel. If you are looking for a very Western hotel with clean design and rooms to Western standards, then you might want to book a room at the Marriott in Kathmandu.

There is honestly not very much to say about the Marriott Kathmandu as you 100% get what you expect from any Marriott anywhere in the world. The hotel has a restaurant, fitness center, a garden and you can use free bikes to get around the city. The hotel offers the AC rooms with a mountain view, free Wi-Fi, a flat TV screen and a hairdryer.

Every morning the hotel serves a beautiful continental breakfast.

When staying at the Marriott Hotel Kathmandu you will want to arrange transfers, tours or taxis to take you to the sights or get around as Thamel, Asan and all the other sights are quite a walk away.

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu

Just like the Marriott Hotel, the Hyatt Regency is a name that instills trust. In Dubai, my absolute favourite restaurant is located in the Hyatt Regency (which means I spend quite a lot of time in the hotel) and I can say that the service, the food and the design in the complex are amazing.

I do not expect any less in Kathmandu.

The Hyatt Regency in Kathmandu is a 15 minute walk away from the Boudhanath Stupa and makes it a great place to stay when you want to discover the city on foot. You will want to take taxis when visiting other sights or Thamel and Asan.

The hotel has is designed to incorporate local design with western luxury and architecture. Outside you can find two pools, loads of comfortable pool chairs and a bar and restaurant. At the hotel you can enjoy hot tubs, a massage center and take strolls through the beautiful hotel garden. At the hotel desk you can find a concierge who will help you to book activities and arrange transfers.

Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Another hotel that does really good with Western tourists is the Radisson Hotel in Kathmandu. This hotel might not be located in the center of the city, but the magnificent views by the pool make more than up for it.

This Western hotel with modern amenities has a beautiful rooftop pool and offers free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. The rooms are spacious, modern and comfortable and all have Air Conditioning, a seating area, a TV and en suite bathrooms.

At the desk downstairs you can arrange tours and have the concierge book you transfer to other cities including Bhaktapur and Pokhara. The hotel also offers beauty services and spa therapy, a casino with 24-hour gaming and a fully decked out gift shop for some last-minute shopping.

The hotel also houses a restaurant serving light meals and beverages. At the Lobby Bar you can go for a drink and a cocktail.

As stated before: The hotel is not exactly in the center of the city and Boudhanat temple is a 20 minute drive away.

Apsara Boutique Hotel

I have talked about Aspara Boutique Hotel before in my guide on great hotels in Thamel and I am more than happy to include this hotel as one of the best hotels to stay at in Kathmandu.

Not only do I love the design and the architecture of the hotel, the absolutely amazing view from the hotel is breathtaking!

Aspara Boutique Hotel is located in the tourist center of Kathmandu but don’t let this scare you off: it is quiet and tourists visiting Nepal are respectful and there for the culture or hiking. It’s not a Brits Abroad kind of area (So not like Kao San Road in Bangkok).

Aspara Hotel offers spacious rooms with an amazing view over the city and the mountains. There is free wi-fi all over the hotel and after a long day of hiking or exploring you are more than welcome to have a bite or drink a beer at the on-site restaurant and bar.

Hotel Yak and Yeti

Next time Josh and I visit Kathmandu we vowed to stay at Yak and Yeti. Not only does this hotel have an AMAZING name, it is also a great hotel. Yak and Yeti is surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens and antique fountains. There are two tennis courts, a casino and a magnificent outdoor pool.

The rooms are elegantly decorated and all have air conditioning and a flat screen TV with cable connection. If you don’t feel like hanging around at the hotel restaurant or bar you can raid the mini-bar or order room service. The hotel houses a fully decked out beauty salon, a spa and a fitness center.

Important for my Muslim friends and readers: the hotel also has a halal menu!

Shivapuri Cottage

Are you looking to escape the city to experience absolute bliss? Then book yourself a few nights into Shivapuri Cottage.

It is not unheard of for climbers and hikers to take a few days off to let their body and their muscles rest before climbing into a small airplane. Shivapuri Cottage is the perfect spot to calm down, relax and let your muscles unwind.

Perched up high in the mountains and overlooking the city, Shivapuri Cottage is a traveler favourite and maybe even a little secret gem. Have a relaxing massage while enjoying a panoramic view of the city or dip into their hot tub to loosen up your muscles.

Shivapuri Cottage is a little bed and breakfast that also offers car hire. This makes it easy to head into the city or even discover and explore the beautiful surroundings of this cute little bed and breakfast.

Shivapuri Cottage offers airport transfers and I would definitely recommend making use of their transfers.

Aloft Kathmandu Thamel

Aloft Thamel in Kathmandu is a relatively new hotel in the middle of the tourist area of Kathmandu. This beautiful, modern and sophisticated hotel has a restaurant, a fully decked out gym, a bar and a beautiful shared lounge.

The hotel also offers their guests a casino, room service and organizes tours and transfers for their guests.

The rooms at Aloft Thamel Kathmandu are spacious with a modern design. The panoramic views from the hotel and the rooms are breath-taking and will leave you wanting to stay longer. Every single room has air comditioning, free wi-fi and an en suite bathroom.

The hotel serves a continental buffet breakfast in the morning after which you can hire a car at the front desk. As the hotel is located in Thamel – a very central district which is known to be the tourist district, it is very easy to get taxis and to walk to Durbar Square and other sights.

Thamel is known for the many cosy little cafes and restaurants and there is always something happening. A great place to stay in Kathmandu.

3 rooms by Pauline

3 Rooms by Pauline is located in the UNESCO world heritage building of Babar Mahal Revisited, this great hotel perfectly marries European blissful sophistication with local heritage. The comfortable and spacious rooms all have an en suite bathroom and a cosy bed.

The design of the rooms is lush and sophisticated making them into my favourite rooms of the whole list.

Each room is decked out with a mini bar and a seating area. In the courtyard of the hotel you can have a relax while sipping at cocktails or one of the local beers. The hotel is not very central in the city making that both Patan and Kathmandu Durbar Square are a taxi ride away.
