As you might want to try the absolute best food Kathmandu has to offer, it is a great idea to explore the Kathmandu valley through a food tour. Here are some of the best food tours to take!

MoMo – the quintessential Nepali dish

Nepali MoMo is a popular and mouth-watering dumpling dish that has captured the hearts and taste buds of many food enthusiasts. These steamed or fried dumplings can be filled with chicken, buffalo, or vegetables, and are typically served with a spicy tomato or sesame sauce.

During my first visit to Nepal, I fell in love with MoMo and couldn’t resist trying them at every opportunity. However, it wasn’t until I tried the cheese and spinach-filled MoMos that I became truly hooked. The combination of savoury cheese and flavourful spinach adds a unique twist to the classic dish, and I can’t get enough of them.

While MoMos can be found in many restaurants throughout Nepal, it’s always a good idea to try them from a local restaurant rather than a western one. The local MoMos are completely different and, in my opinion, 100 times better. The authentic flavours and cooking techniques used by local chefs are unmatched and make for an unforgettable culinary experience.

If you ever find yourself in Nepal, be sure to try the MoMo. Whether you go for the classic chicken or veggie options, or opt for something more adventurous like cheese and spinach, you won’t be disappointed.

The different Kinds of Nepali MoMos

Nepali MoMos are a beloved dish, and it’s easy to see why. These dumplings come in a variety of different styles and flavours, each with their own unique twist on the classic dish. If you’re new to the world of MoMos, there are a few different types to be aware of.

First, there are steamed and fried MoMos, which are the most commonly found varieties. Steamed MoMos are cooked in a bamboo steamer and have a soft, delicate texture. Fried MoMos are crispy on the outside and have a slightly firmer texture. If you’re not into spicy food, these are good options to start with.

For those looking to branch out, there’s Kothey Momo, which are pan-fried with a crispy bottom and soft, steamed top. Jhol MoMo is another popular variety, which features a spicy soup-like broth poured over the dumplings, making for a warm and comforting dish.

Chilly MoMo, as the name suggests, are a spicy variety of MoMos that are cooked in a fiery sauce. If you’re a fan of spicy food, these are a must-try.

Another unique style of MoMo is the open MoMo. These are made with the same dough as traditional MoMos, but they are folded in a way that you can see the meat or vegetables inside. They often look like a little clover. While they can be harder to find, they’re a delicious twist on the classic dumpling.

Personally, my favourite MoMo variety is the Jhol MoMo, as the soup-like broth really elevates the dish to the next level. That said, the Chilly MoMo is also a fantastic option for those who love a good kick of spice.

Where to get the best MoMo in Kathmandu?

As someone who lives in Kathmandu, I have had my fair share of amazing MoMo. Here are some of my favourite places to go for MoMo!

  1. Gurkhaz Grill (Jhol MoMo)

The Jhol MoMo at Gurkhaz Grill are just out of this world. I have not yet found any Jhol MoMo as good as they do it here. The soup is extremely flavourful and carries a nice kick. You can also get other MoMo here, but the Jhol MoMo at Gurkhaz Grill are especially nice!

  • Great Tasty Boso Rahit Mo:Mo

If you are looking for something a little more down to earth and local, the MoMo at Great Tasty Boso Rahit Mo:Mo is worth a try. I love their sauce, and you will get an extremely authentic experience eating here.

  • Old Everest Mo:Mo Center

Another legendary local MoMo center is the Old Everest Mo:Mo center. These MoMo here are absolutely amazing and known to be very authentic. If you would ask a local for recommendations – this is most likely the place they will point you to.

  • Newa MoMo Restaurant

When we first visited Nepal, I was recommended Newa MoMo restaurant for MoMo. The MoMo here are great if you are looking for a restaurant in Thamel. There are better ones in the list, but this is the only one in the centre of the tourist district I can recommend.

A note on MoMo and food poisoning: Please do not be scared to get food poisoning after eating MoMo. These dumplings are steamed for 10 to 15 minutes meaning no bacteria can survive. Just choose a local restaurant where lots of other local people are eating. I have never ever had food poisoning from eating at local restaurants, only from eating at empty western restaurants.

Dal Bhat: the dish a Nepali person eats (almost) every day!

A Nepali Khaja set

If you’re looking for a complete Nepali dining experience, look no further than the Khaja set. This traditional food set is packed with a variety of flavourful dishes, and it’s the perfect way to sample a range of Nepali flavours in one sitting.

The Khaja set typically includes dahl baht with extra curries, providing a wide range of flavours and textures to tantalize your taste buds. The saag adds a delicious leafy green element, and the aluu fry provides a crispy, salty crunch.

But the Khaja set isn’t just about the main dishes. It also includes a variety of sides, such as a vegetable salad and sometimes even fried gourd. The spicy achaar adds a kick of heat, and the gee poured over the rice provides a rich, buttery flavour. And of course, no Nepali meal is complete without some creamy yoghurt to enjoy as a dessert, along with some pickles and a popadom for a satisfying crunch.

What I love most about the Khaja set is how it brings together so many different flavours and textures in one meal. It’s a complete dining experience, and it’s a great way to get a taste of the diverse cuisine that Nepal has to offer.

Khaja set tip: You will always be able to ask for seconds, thirds, and even fourths! In fact, the waiters will come around with rice, dahl, curries, achaar – the whole shabam, when you order a Khaja set (sometimes referred to as Nepali Thali) which means a Khaja set is an all you can eat Nepali feast!

Where to eat the best Khaja sets in Kathmandu?

There are a few places in Kathmandu that are known for their amazing Khaja sets. Here is a short overview of some of my favourites.

  •  Sabal KhajaGhar

If you’re looking for an authentic Nepali dining experience, Sabal KhajaGhar in Kathmandu is a must-visit spot. Located in the bustling neighbourhood of Thamel, Sabal KhajaGhar is a favourite among locals for their delicious and authentic Khaja set.

  • Gurkhaz Grill

When it comes to my go-to spot for Nepali cuisine, there’s one restaurant that stands out above the rest: Gurkhaz Grill. This local gem never fails to impress me with their delicious and authentic Nepali dishes, and their Khaja set is one of my favourites in the city.

  • Jimbu Thakali

If you’re looking for a truly delicious Khaja set in Nepal, Jimbu Thakali is one of the best places to go. Although their Khaja sets can be a bit on the expensive side, they are definitely worth the price. The amount of flavour and variety packed into each set is truly impressive.

  • Krishnarpan Nepali Restaurant

Krishnarpan Nepali Restaurant, located at the luxurious Dwarika’s Hotel, is one of the only fine dining restaurants in Kathmandu that offers Nepali cuisine. While I personally prefer the Khaja sets served at local restaurants, there’s no denying the fact that the dining experience at Krishnarpan is a cut above the rest.

Best restaurants for Chatamari in Kathmandu

Sadly I have only had Chatamari a few times because I mostly eat Thakali sets and MoMos when I go out for Nepali food. However, I asked around and here are some places that came highly recommended:

  • Newa MoMo Restaurant

If you’re looking to try Chatamari in Thamel, look no further than Newa MoMo Restaurant. This cosy eatery, located in the heart of Thamel, is known for its authentic Newari cuisine, including their delicious Chatamari.

Newa MoMo Restaurant was actually the first place I tried Chatamari, and I was instantly hooked. The dish was cooked to perfection, with the crispy base perfectly complementing the flavourful toppings.

  • Chatamari Chhen Restro

If you’re looking for an authentic Chatamari experience in Kathmandu, look no further than Chatamari Chhen Restro. This unassuming eatery is a local favourite, serving up some of the best Chatamari in the city.

Sel Roti – a great choice for breakfast

Sel Roti is a traditional Nepali dish that’s made from rice flour and sugar. It’s a type of fried bread that’s shaped into a round, donut-like form and is often enjoyed as a snack or dessert.

What makes Sel Roti so special is the process of making it. The dough is made from rice flour, which is mixed with water and sugar to create a thick batter. The batter is then poured into a special funnel-like utensil and fried in hot oil until it turns golden brown.

The end result is a crispy and slightly sweet bread that’s perfect for snacking on. It’s often enjoyed on its own or with a cup of tea or coffee.

Sel Roti is an important part of Nepali cuisine and is especially popular during festivals and special occasions. In fact, it’s often considered a symbol of good luck and is served at weddings and other celebratory events.

I myself often pick up a sel roti from the little bakery down the road for breakfast. Make sure to have them freshly baked so that they are still nice and crispy.

Where to get Sel Roti in Kathmandu

I do not have a special recommendation on where to get sel roti. The best places can be found near Asan market and near Indra Chowk or in Patan. These small little stalls and bakeries cannot be found on Google Maps but you will recognise them by the heaps of sel roti out front and the large vat of oil they are made in. Buy your sel roti from one of these places. I am sure you will love it!

Yomari – a special Nepali sweet eaten during the harvest season

Yomari is a traditional Nepali dessert that’s sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. It’s a type of dumpling that’s made from rice flour and is typically filled with a sweet mixture of molasses or chaku, sesame seeds, and coconut.

Although I’m not a huge fan of Yomari myself, I can appreciate the unique flavours and textures that this dish offers. The dumpling’s soft and chewy exterior perfectly complements the sweet and nutty filling, creating a one-of-a-kind taste sensation.

What’s interesting about Yomari is that it’s traditionally eaten during the festival of Yomari Punhi, which is celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley. During this festival, families gather together to make and share Yomari as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity.

If you’re looking to try Yomari for yourself, there are many local vendors and restaurants throughout Nepal that serve this traditional dessert. It’s a great way to experience the unique flavours and cultural significance of Nepali cuisine. So, if you have a sweet tooth and are looking for a unique dessert experience, be sure to give Yomari a try.

Where to get Yomari in Kathmandu

As mentioned before, I am not the biggest fan of Yomari. I think it is a texture thing. However, if you want to try Yomari, there are a few places in Kathmandu that serve it:

  • The Village Café

The Village Cafe is a charming little restaurant nestled in the heart of Patan that serves up a delicious selection of Nepali dishes, including the traditional dessert, Yomari. If you’re looking to try this unique Nepali delicacy, The Village Cafe is definitely worth a visit.

One of the things that sets The Village Cafe apart is the fact that they serve Yomari all year round. This is a real treat, as traditionally, Yomari is only served during the Yomari Punhi festival. But at The Village Cafe, you can enjoy this sweet and sticky treat any time you like.

  • Raithaane

Raithaane is a must-visit restaurant for those looking to explore the diverse culinary landscape of Nepal. Located in the heart of Lalitpur, this restaurant is famous for offering a wide range of obscure dishes from all over the country, many of which you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re a foodie on the hunt for the next best thing or simply curious about Nepali cuisine, Raithaane is definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to try some Yomari!

  • Pasa Newari Kitchen

Pasa Newari Kitchen is a wonderful restaurant located in the heart of Thamel that offers a traditional Newari experience. The restaurant is known for serving authentic Newari cuisine, which includes a variety of dishes that you may not find anywhere else in Nepal. One such dish that you must try at Pasa Newari Kitchen is Yomari.

Sadheko – The perfect little snack to have with a pint of beer

 Sadheko is a popular Nepali dish that can be enjoyed in different variations, but one thing that’s constant is the delicious spicy flavour that will leave your taste buds craving for more. One of the most well-known versions of Sadheko is Wai Wai Sadheko, which is made by mixing Wai Wai dry noodles with a blend of spices, chili, and various vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers. This dish is perfect as a snack and goes particularly well with a cold beer or any other drinks.

There are many other variations of Sadheko as well, including peanut sadheko and aloo sadheko, among others. These variations use different ingredients, but the spicy and tangy flavour is still the same. While Sadheko is known for being quite spicy, you can always ask the restaurant to make it less spicy to suit your taste.

What I love about Sadheko is that it’s incredibly refreshing, especially on a hot day. The spices and vegetables combine to create a burst of flavours that will leave you feeling invigorated. One of my personal favourites is Wai Wai Sadheko because of the crunchy texture of the noodles mixed with the spicy flavour.

Where to get Sadheko in Kathmandu

Honestly, you will be able to get sadheko almost anywhere in the city. It is served in many bars and restaurants. I do not have any recommendations except for you to at least try it once!

Newari Khaja – A Newari version on the nepali khaja

Newari Khaja is a unique and delicious variation of the classic Khaja set that is popular in Nepal. Unlike the traditional Khaja set, the Newari Khaja is mostly eaten cold and is a great option for those looking for a refreshing and flavourful meal. The mustard leaves and the sweet spiced soup add a unique tanginess to the dish, while the roasted soya beans and curried potatoes offer a delightful crunch. The dish is perfect for a light lunch or a quick snack, and it pairs perfectly with a cold beer or a refreshing glass of lemonade.

Newari Khaja is a must-try dish for anyone visiting Nepal, and it’s particularly popular in the Kathmandu Valley, which is known for its Newari cuisine. Many restaurants in the area offer this dish, and it’s definitely worth giving it a try. If you’re looking for a unique culinary experience that’s both refreshing and flavourful, Newari Khaja is the perfect dish to try.

Where to eat the Newari Khaja in Kathmandu?

You will easily find some Newari Khaja restaurants in Kathmandu. Most of them will be very local, but that is part of the charm. My favourite one, however, can be found in Kirtipur, just outside of the city.

  • Temple View Restro and BBQ in Kirtipur

Temple View Restro and BBQ is a hidden gem in the city of Kirtipur. If you are looking for a great place to enjoy Newari Khaja, this is the place to be. What sets this restaurant apart from the rest is the stunning view you get of the city from its rooftop terrace. From here, you can see some of the most important landmarks of the city, such as the Swayambhunath Stupa and on a clear day you will have the most amazing view of the Himalayas!

The restaurant itself is located next to an old temple, which creates an intimate and peaceful atmosphere. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the food is simply amazing. When it comes to the Newari Khaja, they have managed to capture the authentic taste and presentation of the dish. You can taste the roasted and curried soya beans, fermented mustard leaves, curried potato, and the sweet spiced soup with potatoes in every bite.

  • Lohsha Ghasha Restaurant

Lohsha Ghasha Restaurant is a must-visit spot for anyone looking to try authentic Newari Khaja in Kathmandu. The restaurant is located near Thamel and offers a cosy and traditional atmosphere for its diners. What I love about Lohsha Ghasha is that you can choose to sit on either benches or pillows while enjoying your meal, which adds to the authentic experience.

Their Newari Khaja set is fantastic, with a great combination of cold and warm dishes that are bursting with flavours. You’ll get to try the beaten rice, roasted and curried soya beans, fermented mustard leaves, curried potato, and the sweet spiced soup with potatoes, all in one set. The best part is that the prices here are pretty cheap, making it a great place for budget travellers.

JuJu Dhau – The best yoghurt in the world

JuJu Dhau is a true Nepali delicacy, and for me personally, it is the best yoghurt in the world. This sweet, creamy yoghurt is a specialty of Bhaktapur, a city located just outside Kathmandu, but you can find it in various places in Kathmandu as well. The texture is thick and velvety, and the flavour is a perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

What makes JuJu Dhau so special is its traditional production method. The yoghurt is made by boiling milk until it thickens, and then it is sweetened with caramelized sugar. This mixture is then transferred to earthenware pots and left to ferment overnight. The end result is a yoghurt that is cool and refreshing, with a smooth, creamy texture that simply melts in your mouth.

It’s no wonder that JuJu Dhau is a favourite of locals and visitors alike. I personally swear by it and actually find it difficult to like any other yoghurt. If you are in Nepal and are looking for some yoghurt for breakfast, you simply must try JuJu Dhau. It’s an experience you won’t forget, and you may even find yourself craving it long after you’ve left the country.

Where to get JuJu Dhau in Kathmandu

It is hard to order JuJu Dhau in a restaurant in Nepal. That is why I would recommend going to a supermarket such as Salesberry or even a local coldstore (a store that has a fridge) and getting yourself an earthen pot of JuJu Dhau. It will cost you about 350 rupees.
