Pocahontas, the Native American princess who played a crucial role in the early history of the American colonies, passed away in Gravesend and is believed to be buried near the St George’s Church. However, the original church has since burned down, leaving the exact location of her grave uncertain. Despite this, the town of Gravesend remains a significant site in her legacy and a testament to her lasting impact.

Pocahontas, also known as Matoaka and later as Rebecca Rolfe, was a young Native American princess of the Powhatan tribe. She is best known for her alleged relationship with the English colonist John Smith, which helped to prevent the outbreak of war between the two groups. In 1614, she married John Rolfe and travelled to England, where she was received as a celebrity and even met with King James I. Sadly, she passed away in Gravesend at the young age of 21, during her trip back to her homeland.

Today, visitors can pay their respects to the legendary princess by visiting a statue of her in the churchyard of St George’s Church in Gravesend. The statue serves as a tribute to her life and legacy, and a reminder of the important role that she played in shaping the history of both the United Kingdom and the United States. So, whether you’re a history buff or simply looking to learn more about this remarkable woman, be sure to stop by and pay your respects at the Pocahontas statue in Gravesend.
